Swim Meets:
All swimmers are encouraged to compete on a regular basis. The Board attempts to schedule at least one team meet each month. The meets are usually USS sanctioned meets, held in the Phoenix area. Some swimmers will travel outside of the Phoenix area, to swim against swimmers of neighboring states. Swimmers are divided into Q+ and Q- time standards to assure swimmers compete against other swimmers with like abilities.
Meets sessions are no longer than four hours. Many meets are two days, but when you are just starting out we try to go on one of the days. Swimmers must know and perform the correct strokes, turns and finishes to be able to attend a meet. Then the coach, the swimmer and the parent must feel we are all ready for competitions.
Time improvement is stressed over ribbon winning. Swimmers should learn to compete against “themselves.” A time improvement means more to a seasonal swimmer than a first place ribbon. This is the real advantage of being a swimmer; personal time improvement is possible for everyone.
Meet goals are set at the beginning of each season for each swimmer and are a good measuring tool of improvement. At the beginning of each season the coach and the Board decide which sanctioned meets to attend (the coach is sent to sanctioned meets). Sanctioned meets must have at least four swimmers attending to remain sanctioned, with championship meets being excepted from this rule. You can attend an unsanctioned meet, just let the coach know in advance so that you can receive the proper entry form.
Meets can be a challenging experience for swimmers and parents. Being supportive of your swimmer is the best role a parent can make. Meets are a learning experience for the swimmer. It is not guaranteed the swimmer will always make a best time, but is a motivator for the swimmer to make the appropriate steps in reaching that time at the next opportunity. How a swimmer learns to handle disappointments is more important than how he/she handles success. This affects both their swimming career and their growth as a person.
